When the scorching sun beats down on Japan during the summer months, seeking refuge from the heat becomes a necessity. After a day of exploring Ueno's galleries, museums, and gardens, “Ameyoko” is the perfect place to cool off while enjoying lively evening strolls, shopping and cultural experiences.

Ueno's Ameyoko is a shopping haven where visitors can find affordable , high-quality and mouth-watering foodstuffs. It began as a black market for American goods after World War II and has since evolved into a bustling marketplace. Stretching about 500 meters near Ueno Station, the area is now a melting pot of shops, stalls, and restaurants, offering cheap and delicious food. It's a shopper's paradise with year-round discounts, and frequent sales, particularly during the evening hours.

Strolling along Ameyoko on a summer evening is a delightful experience. Aside from the main street, don't miss the Ameyoko Plaza located under the elevated JR line, where you'll find shops offering a variety of seafood and ethnic foods. From groceries, to specialty fashion stores, the street offers an array of products, including handbags, vintage jeans, cosmetics, and sneakers.

Getting to Ameyoko is a breeze, making it easily accessible to explore this vibrant shopping district. To get there, hop on the JR Yamanote Line, which conveniently connects major areas of Tokyo, and get off at Ueno Station. Once you arrive, start your adventure by heading south from the station and be on the lookout for signs guiding you towards the bustling Ameyoko shopping street.

Oh, and you’ll notice that Ameyoko is very clean! Your efforts to keep it that way are greatly appreciated! Please avoid littering - if there are no trash cans, please take your garbage back to your hotel and dispose of it there. Also, when you purchase food from a street vendor, for example, either enjoy the food there, or carry it with you to somewhere you can enjoy it, but try to avoid eating while walking around. This is customary in Japan and shows respect.

Ueno comes alive in the evening, offering a refreshing escape from the scorching Japanese summer heat. With a wide range of activities, exploring the charming streets and cultural delights is an ideal way to cool off and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere. Don't miss the chance to experience the magic of Ueno during the cooler evening hours on your next summer visit to Tokyo.
