At this traditional summer event participants make a wish and write it on a a paper lantern. The lanterns are then put on Sumida River. The lanterns' gentle light shining on the water surface while they float downstream is a beautiful sight.
Come to watch the lanterns float down the river. There is a path running along Sumida River where you can take a walk. You may also purchase a lantern and make a wish.
Registration to participate and purchase a lantern will be open on the day from 14:00 until all lanterns are taken. Go to Sumida Park near Azuma-bashi Bridge in front of the Tokyo Cruise building to register. A lantern costs 1,500 yen.
The Sumida River Toro Nagashi event is an opportunity to take some special pictures. Try your night photography skills here. From the venue in Sumida Park and Azuma-bashi Bridge you can see the iconic golden Asahi Beer Headquarters and Tokyo Skytree illuminated at night. To make your pictures extra special dress up in yukata, a light summer kimono. There are many shops in Asakusa near Senso-ji Temple that rent yukata and will help you get dressed in style for the occasion.
