The giant panda baby born in Ueno Zoo this June is called Xiang Xiang. This cute name is written with the Chinese character for fragrance. We hope that little Xiang Xiang will grow healthy and strong like a beautiful fragrant flower.
Ueno Zoo in Tokyo's Taito Ward is the oldest zoo in Japan and home to Xiang Xiang's parents Shin Shin and Ri Ri. 100 days after Shin Shin gave birth to the new panda cub, the baby's name was revealed by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. The name was chosen by a selection committee from over 320,000 suggestions received from the public.
From this December onwards you can visit Xiang Xiang at Ueno Zoo. When the little panda is bigger and stronger, she will make her public debut with her mother. She is already famous in Japan and has become the new star of the zoo.
