Go running along Sumida River

Sumida River is a great place to go running in Tokyo. Joggers and runners use the paths on both sides of the river. There are plenty of vending machines and several train and subway stations near the river. Asakusa, Kuramae, and Asakusabashi are all located next to the riverbanks. If you are looking for a convenience store or café, look near one of the stations.

If you are staying in the Asakusa area or nearby, you can just walk over to the river. There are paths to run both upstream and downstream from Asakusa. Create your own course along the river. A short loop passing only a couple of bridges before turning back or a long run, for example towards Tsukishima and Tokyo Bay. There are quite a few bridges across Sumida River, but you have to wait only at very few traffic lights.

Take a (photo) walk along Sumida River in Sumida Park

If you just want to take a walk, take the path along the river in Sumida Park. From here you have excellent views of Tokyo Skytree, Azuma-bashi Bridge and the golden Asahi Beer Headquarters building. Near Kototoi-bashi Bridge there is a playground for children and also two small cafes overlooking the river. During “sakura” cherry blossom time in the spring Sumida Park is a popular spot for “hanami”, seeing the cherry blossoms.

More Sumida River fun

To see more of the river, you can take a Yakatabune boat and have lunch or dinner on the water. Another option is a cruise from Asakusa to Hamarikyu or Odaiba. If you are new to the area, you can get all the information you need at the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center located on opposite Senso-ji Temple’s Kaminarimon Gate.
