Yabusame means shooting arrows from horseback and in Asakusa it is a traditional event held annually. Equestrian archery has a long history in Japan and is performed in ceremonies at some shrines. In the Edo period (1603-1868), yabusame was one event of Asakusa Shrine’s New Year celebrations. Kusajishi is archery practice on foot using a target in the shape of a deer.

Please note that the Yabusame venue gets very crowded and access may be restricted. Admission for Kusajishi is free. Advance tickets for Yabusame are 3000 yen per seat. The venue is close to the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information located in front of Senso-ji Temple’s Kaminarimon Gate.

The event may be canceled in case of bad weather.
