The “Hagoita-Ichi” Battledore Fair began as part of the “Toshi-no-Ichi” Year-end Market at Senso-ji Temple in the mid-Edo period (1603-1868). Around 1950 the “Hagoita-Ichi” became established as a typical year-end event. “Hagoita” are good-luck charms. Some of the ornamental battledores are decorated with Kabuki actors in Edo style, and other designs pick up on current events, popular celebrities or other subjects and personalities of the year. Colorful and unusual designs are for sale at the fair.
