The miya-mikoshi (portable shrine) of Torikoe Shrine is called Sengan-Mikoshi (sengan are nearly 4 tons). It is the heaviest mikoshi in Tokyo. On Sunday this mikoshi is carried by the parishioners. The mikoshi parade is led by people dressed as Sarutahiko and Tekomai and children carrying flags in five colors. The climax of the festival is in the evening, when the paper lanterns of the mikoshi and the neighborhoods’ lanterns hung from long poles are illuminated. This special and impressive “miyairi”, the return of the mikoshi to the shrine, is called “Torikoe Night Festival”.
