Onoterusaki Shrine

The Onoterusaki Shrine is dedicated to Ono-no-Takamura, a famous scholar and poet from the early Heian period (794-1185). It is said to date back to 852 when the local people revered Ono-no-Takamura here after his death that year. The shrine is also dedicated to the scholar Sugawara-no-Michizane and has a “Fujizuka” mound, a miniature Mount Fuji. As “Onoteru-sama” the shrine is mentioned in Ichiyo Higuchi’s story “Takekurabe”.
