Sougenji Temple

Sogen-ji is often called Kappa Temple. During the Edo period (1603-1868), the area around the temple flooded often when heavy rain caused the ditches to overflow. This made life difficult. Kihachi was a local maker of “kappa” raincoats. He used his own money to build better drainage in the area. It is said that he had help from Kappa, supernatural creatures that live in the water. Merchants whose business is related to water come to Sogen-ji. You can see several sculptures of Kappa at the temple and in the streets nearby.
