In the Edo period (1603-1868), “yabusame” was one event of Asakusa Shrine’s New Year celebrations. “Kusajishi” is archery with a target shaped like a deer; it takes place in the Sanyabori Square in Sumida Park. “Yabusame” is an impressive display of horseback archery. Participants in traditional hunting costumes shoot arrows while galloping on a horse. It takes place in Sumida Park between Tobu Railway Bridge and Kototoi-bashi Bridge.
Tickets for “yabusame” are 3000 yen per seat in advance. “Kusajishi” is free. The “yabusame” venue gets very crowded; access may be restricted. Use of selfie sticks not allowed. The event may be canceled in case of bad weather.
