Fishermen in the Kishu region (now Wakayama prefecture) had a custom to let broken hooks sink to the bottom of the sea to appease the God of the Seas. This developed into the memorial service for old and broken needles at Awashima Shrine. “Hari-kuyo” is held for old needles that people bring and stick into a piece of tofu at Senso-ji Temple’s Awashima-do, thanking the needles for their service.
