Ukera-no-shinji is a ceremony to drive off evil spirits and welcome spring. The ceremony is held in the traditional style of the Heian period (794-1185). Part of the event is a kind of play where priests and oni demons interact and the smoke of burnt Ukera is used to purge evil spirits and dispel evil. Ukera is a flowering plant in the family Asteraceae and its young shoots are edible.
